After all this time, let's look back to 31 January 2020 and consider the legacy of that great day.
As you will know, it is a historic and infamous date: at 11pm on that date the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) officially left the EU - "referred to as Brexit".
There were many celebrations at the time: Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister at the time and instigator of the successful initiative, led the celebrations using government funds, and the other architect of the disaster, Nigel Farage, once leader of the "Brexit Party", also hosted another event. Many people were upset that a "wake" was denied permission.
The referendum vote on 23 June 2016 was very close: 17,410,742 voted to leave the EU while 16,141,241 voted to remain on a 72.2% turnout.
Brexit was a disastrous step which was the beginning of a great slump in Britain's status in the world and in its fortunes. The UK became a stand-alone country which was free to forge new commercial deals with the rest of the world in the form of "trade-deals", designed to set out the ways in which the UK could sell its products and services, while allowing it access to the resources required. These trade-deals negotiations proceeded with seeming great speed with other countries: the United States of America (USA), the European Union (EU) being the main two important examples, and supposedly with other countries falling into line quite quickly. Unfortunately, these deals failed to come to fruition in the way Boris the Destroyer had hoped. And our Commonwealth connections failed to help - notwithstanding the popularity and hard work of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and later His Majesty King William V. Fortunately, the almost instant abdication of King Charles III had almost no negative consequences.
The USA, in the form of Donald J Trump (the Malificent), was most poisonous and derailed the deal for a long time, and although the talks were rescued somewhat when Nigel Farage became President, the UK had to agree to reduce its food standards to US levels, put chrome fins and bull bars on every car it sold to the US and agree to US takeovers of many UK manufacturing companies. The situation with the vindictive EU was not much better: EU countries bought all our energy companies and flooded the UK food market with snails legs and horse lasagne, for example.
Once the UK had conceded its sovereignty ro the USA, its people became greatly discouraged. The temporarily divided views of the Brexit debates and vote and the arduous negotiation process of gaining the Great Brexit Deal and passing of the legislation were finally resolved and the country united in emigrating to foreign climes to escape the plummeting value of the British Dollar. With this new negative attitude, British ingenuity rapidly declined. Unemployment soared and parts of The North were declared disaster zones of famine and disease. Many former leaders of industry managed toescape to the Cayman Islands and lived off their investments.
Great Britains former highly regarded football and cricket prowess fell away and England failed to qualify for the FIFA world cup. Other sports also fell into disrepute, and the defeat by a Monaco team oin rugby union finally sealed the disgrace.
The UK is now a 3rd-world country relying on the generosity of Russia and China keeping from ultimate decline.
